  • Garcia v. Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority Verdict: $13.820 million
    Joseph Garcia was a 56-year old unemployed passenger on an LACMTA bus, when that bus struck a parked car transportation carrier. Mr. Garcia was thrown around the interior of the bus and suffered a subdural hematoma resulting in severe brain damage and hemiplegia of his left side.
  • Pascua/White v. Industrial Asphalt Verdict: $14.4 million
    Asphalt truck improperly serviced and inspected by driver and asphalt company caused chain collision. Crash resulted in brain damage to nephrology surgeon and the deaths of her husband and 81-year-old mother. They were passengers in the vehicle struck by a load of hot asphalt on freeway. Action brought by surviving doctor and stepchildren.
  • Brezovec v. State of California Verdict: $8.8 million
    Severe brain injury to a 14-year-old girl who was a passenger in a vehicle struck by a truck on a 4H sponsored camping trip.
  • Cueto v. Braun Settlement: $7 million
    Tractor Trailer vs. Automobile collision resulting in the amputation of the left arm and Traumatic Brain Injury to 47-year-old man.
  • Ogden v. Hamm Brothers Construction Verdict: $6.4 million
    Brain injury sustained by 17-year-old motorcycle passenger when the motorcycle struck a concrete barrier left alongside the traffic lane by construction crew.
  • Garay v. Flynn Settlement: $5.5 million
    Motorcycle lost traction when it encountered roadway which was flooded due to improper pumping of hotel pool water onto the street. 32-year-old woman sustained brain injury.
  • Doe Individual v. Doe City Settlement: $5.14 million
    Mother was hit by an on-duty police officer and ejected from her vehicle. She received severe brain injury from the incident.
  • Choi v. State of California Settlement: $5 million
    A young homemaker and mother suffered serious head trauma while a passenger in a car that was struck by a Caltrans vehicle.
  • Grill v. City of Los Angeles Settlement: $4.5 million
    Collision at Los Angeles Airport involving a police vehicle and an airline tug.
  • Staley v. Metropolitan Transit Authority Settlement: $3.2 million
    Twenty-one-year-old pedestrian, a UCLA graduate student, suffered traumatic brain injuries after being struck by MTA bus.
  • Damron v. Laidlaw Settlement: $3.67 million
    Plaintiff severely injured after a school bus, operated by a private contractor, failed to yield to oncoming traffic. Injury to brain, facial paralysis, fractured hip and multiple other personal injuries were sustained.

    Celebrity driver struck woman in crosswalk causing orthopedic and closed head injuries.
  • Davin v. Skyview Limousine Verdict $1.15 million
    A closed head injury suffered by 55-year-old aerospace engineer resulting from a rear-end automobile collision.
  • Parvool v. OLS Hotels - Confidential Settlement
    Antonio Parvool was partially paralyzed when he dove into a hotel swimming pool in Hawaii that lacked adequate warnings. The Hotel Management Company was headquartered in Los Angeles and unsuccessfully tried to move the case to Hawaii, apply Hawaiian law, and claim that Parvool assumed the risk.
  • Quinones v. Chevron: Confidential Settlement
    Industrial worker was paralyzed when a he was struck by a falling auger at an oil refinery in El Segundo California owned by Chevron. Chevron unsuccessfully tried to avoid liability by blaming Robert Quinones' employers and Mr. Quinones for the incident. Discovery revealed that Chevron had promised to inspect the site and declared it safe on multiple occasions without actually doing so.

  • Choi v. State of California Settlement: $5 million

  • Doe Individual v. Doe Insurance Co. Settlement: $2.9 million
    Plaintiff doctor denied disability benefits by insurer.
  • Thorndal v. UnumProvident Verdict: $1.4 million
    Litigation attorney denied disability benefits by insurer. Jury returned verdict awarding lifetime benefits in excess of $1.4 million plus damages for bad faith, attorney fees and costs.
  • Doe Individual v. Doe Insurance Co. Settlement: $1.5 million
    Litigation attorney denied disability benefits by insurer.

Spinal Cord Injury Case Results

  • Lattanzi v. City of Los Angeles Settlement during trial: $6.7 million
    Premises Liability case involving a bicycle rider who fell over an unguarded curb and retaining wall when he stopped to rest. Mr. Lattanzi sustained injuries resulting in paraplegia.
  • Weidenaar v. State of California Settlement $9 million
    Highway Design case involving failure to adequately guard center median "drop-off" area, resulting in spinal cord injuries to 33-year-old man.
  • Mathews v. Goodyear Confidential Settlement
    Brian Mathews, a former LAPD bomb squad officer, was injured in a crash involving his GM Suburban after the failure of a Goodyear Load Range E tire. The tread on the Goodyear tire separated, causing a loss of control and rollover. Mathews was ejected from the vehicle and suffered a spinal cord injury and is now a paraplegic. Discovery on the case led to a defect investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into the Goodyear LRE tires and the company voluntarily recalled many LRE tires.
  • Rapan v. Dorel Juvenile Group, Cosco and Daimler Chrysler Confidential Settlement
    Settlement obtained on behalf of a child who suffered a devastating spinal cord injury. Two-and-a-half-year-old Isaiah Rapan was injured in a crash while secured in a Cosco Grand Explorer shield booster seat in the rear seat of his parent's Jeep Cherokee. GB&W attorneys established that the booster seat and the Jeep car seat were poorly designed and caused Isaiah's injuries.

  • Griggs v. West-Pac Industries and Tools Exchange Verdict: $58 million
    Christine Spagnoli was an integral member of the trial team which obtained a verdict for a male worker who suffered severe burn injuries caused by a defective O-ring. Largest single plaintiff's personal injury verdict in California. Jury also awarded a record $48 million in non-economic compensatory damages.
  • Doe Individual v. Doe Defendant Settlement: $32.5 million
    Passenger in vehicle which was struck by another vehicle causing catastrophic intestinal injuries including loss of function of most of the digestive track.
  • Ogden v. Hamm Brothers Construction Verdict: $6.4 million

  • McGee v. The City of Alameda Settlement $25 million
    Construction worker hit an underground energized electrical line while using a drill at a construction site, causing him severe electrical injuries that resulted in third degree burns to over 20 percent of his body, limb amputations and brain damage.
  • Ricks v. Pharaoh's Lost Kingdom Amusement Park Binding Arbitration: $4.9 million
    Personal injury on a Ferris wheel amusement park ride.
  • Ralph v. Singapore Airlines Confidential Settlement
    David Ralph was a passenger on Singapore Airline's Flight SQ006 which crashed when the pilot used the wrong runway attempting to depart for Los Angeles, CA from the Chiang Kai Shek International Airport in October 2000. Mr. Ralph suffered severe injuries, including massive burns and post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Hodges v. State of California Settlement: $3.5 million
    A father and his two sons sustained severe spinal and multiple injuries as a result of a multi-vehicle automobile accident caused by a drunken off-duty CHP officer returning from a CHP party.
  • Doe Individual v. Doe Company Settlement: $3 million
    Industrial accident involving a brake failure on a loader causing orthopedic injuries to the victim.
  • Doe Individual v. Doe individual Settlement: $2.45 million
    Route driver struck individual in unmarked crosswalk. Plaintiff suffered orthopedic injuries.
  • Maxcy v. Home Depot Verdict: $2.3 million
    Man struck by electric pallet jack driven by Home Depot employee while unloading truck at store. Damage sustained exacerbated prior lower back injury.
  • Doe Individual v. Doe Celebrity Settlement: $2.1 million
    Celebrity driver struck woman in crosswalk causing orthopedic and closed head injuries.
  • Mazariego v. Standard Brands Settlement: $1.5 million
    An employee of the defendant advised plaintiff to use gasoline to remove tile adhesive from her kitchen floor. After following employee's advice, gasoline fumes ignited, resulting in severe burn injuries for the plaintiff.
  • Doe Individual v. Doe Restaurant Settlement: $1 million
    Woman who was allergic to nut products suffered a strong reaction after the restaurant provided food that contained nut products.
  • Juarez v. Superior Court Verdict upheld
    California Supreme Court upheld original case verdict in favor of plaintiff, a worker who lost his finger in a machine accident. At issue in the appeal was the ability of any nine jurors to agree on each issue presented, not the same nine on each issue. The law remains to this day.
  • Rosen v. McDonald's Confidential Settlement
    Woman suffered third degree burns from hot coffee that spilled in her lap at a McDonald's drive-through.
  • Crawford v MGM Confidential Settlement
    Performer Michael Crawford was starring in the EFX show in Las Vegas when safety devices failed. Mr. Crawford was injured and required hip replacement surgery.
