New ‘Worst Drivers’ List Puts California at the Top

You’ve probably seen numerous online articles referencing the “worst drivers in the country are in ‘State X'” before. They are fun articles to reference, and they can contain some interesting information. But for the most part, they are meant for water cooler talk. There isn’t anything that happens in State X that doesn’t happen in State Y. It is simply the perception that it happens more there.

We say all of this as a new ranking of drivers in the 50 states was released, and it puts California at the top. This not-so-honorable distinction was made by a web marketplace for auto insurance. The company cited an increase in drunk driving and distracted driving, as well as an overall increase in driving citations as reasons for California taking the number one spot for worst drivers in the United States. Last year, California was ranked second in the same list.

Whether this is objectively true or not isn’t the point. In many ways, this is just a fun list. In other ways, there is a serious discussion to be had here. Drunk driving and distracted driving are serious issues that need to be effectively addressed through legislation and legal action by victims. Without that, these problems are only going to get worse in the years to come.

In the meantime, there will still be accidents that involve these circumstances, and the victims need to be ready to fight for their rights and interests in the aftermath.
