Suspect Arrested in Fatal Boardwalk Crash

California police officers say they have arrested a man accused of causing a fatal accident in Venice Beach. The accident occurred on August 3, leaving one victim dead and at least 11 others injured. One of the victims remains in critical condition.

Authorities report the driver, who was arrested on Sunday, Aug. 4, was traveling at a high rate of speed near the town’s boardwalk. The man was driving recklessly while scores of people were walking along the road to the beach. Instead of staying on the road, he plowed onto the boardwalk. Officers are investigating whether the driver had a medical emergency that may have caused him to go off the road near the intersection with the boardwalk and Dudley Avenue. Others say they saw the man, driving a Dodge Charger, intentionally turn onto the boardwalk at about 35 miles per hour.

Witnesses at the scene called the accident “horrible,” describing a scene with victims screaming and running out of the way. Stores’ sidewalk wares were strewn about the boardwalk, with mannequins toppling and displays crushed. One bystander said he saw a body flying through the air. Upon rushing to the scene, he found a group of bloodied and injured people. The driver reportedly fled the scene.

The boardwalk area is a popular cultural gathering for locals. The spot is known for its dining, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor workout area known as Muscle Beach.

In this case, the relatives of the decedent could seek financial compensation from the driver for wrongful death in connection with the fatal accident. Even if the driver does not face criminal charges, he could be held responsible for victims’ medical costs, pain and suffering, emotional distress and a variety of other claims. In addition, family members of the decedent could seek compensation for loss of consortium and funeral expenses. These victims would be wise to consult the services of a qualified personal injury attorney.
