Toyota Sudden Acceleration Lawsuits in Los Angeles

Sudden Acceleration and Braking Problems Prompt Toyota Recalls

Hundreds of thousands of Toyota vehicles are on American roads today, despite quality problems that have dogged various models of Toyota cars for a number of years. While Toyota maintained for many years that no problem existed with its electric throttle control, Toyota drivers were unsure. Owners of different models of Toyota cars had slightly different problems: some characterized it as sudden acceleration from a sticking accelerator (gas pedal) and others as brake defects.

At Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP, our Los Angeles attorneys can represent you in a number of complex automobile defect claims, including those involving sudden acceleration, braking problems, and other issues in Toyota vehicles. When you’ve sustained catastrophic, life-altering injuries in a crash, you deserve to have quality representation on your side – and with our highly-respected Southern California law firm, you can trust that we’ll explore every legal option for compensation.

What Acceleration Issues Have Drivers Reported?

Starting in the early 2000s, some Toyota vehicle owners began to complain that:

  • The floor mat trapped the car’s accelerator in a down position
  • A problem in the steering column affected the driver’s ability to control the vehicle
  • The car suddenly accelerated for no known reason
  • Sudden acceleration or loss of control of the Toyota vehicle resulted in injuries and deaths

After a groundbreaking 2009 investigation by ABC News revealed the widespread sudden acceleration issues in Toyota cars, Toyota was forced to acknowledge the problem and eventually recall many models of their vehicles. By 2014, Toyota agreed to pay $1.2 billion to avoid a criminal prosecution related to the “unintended acceleration” issues.

Toyota acknowledged that there may be auto defects in the following models of Toyota cars:

  • Avalon (2005-2010)
  • Camry (2007-2010)
  • Corolla (2009-2010)
  • Highlander (2008-2010)
  • Lexus HS 250h, IS 350, IS 250 and ES 350 (2006-2010)
  • Venza (2009-2010)
  • Matrix (2009-2010)
  • Prius (2004-2010)
  • RAV4 (2009-2010)
  • Sequoia (2008-2010)
  • Tacoma (2005-2010)
  • Tundra (2007-2010)

* The above list may not be inclusive of all Toyota vehicles subject to a recall.

Dedicated Legal Advocacy on Your Behalf

Since the issues with Toyota brake failures and sudden acceleration first became public, there have been multiple individual sudden acceleration lawsuits against the company – many of which led to additional Toyota vehicles being recalled. When defective design, defective manufacture, or defective car parts result in serious injury or death, the auto defect lawyers at Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP, have a track record of getting results.

Ranked #1 in Personal Injury in California in 2008 and 2010 (the last year such rankings were published) by Best Lawyers in America and rated Tier 1 in Personal Injury in U.S. News-Best Lawyers Los Angeles rankings every year since 2011, Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP has earned the respect of its peers for the results achieved in court.
