In August of 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics (a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson) announced that it was recalling two models of its hip replacement devices – the ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System.
The DePuy hip replacement recall followed on the heels of numerous lawsuits on behalf of patients who suffered ongoing pain, difficulty walking and other symptoms that often could only be corrected with a second hip replacement.
Approximately 93,000 patients worldwide were implanted with DuPuy hip replacement products and some 12 to 13 percent of those medical devices failed, leaving more than 10,000 people facing additional surgery.
If you received a hip replacement between the years of 2003 and 2010, you may have received one of these defective hip replacement devices.
Contact a product liability attorney at Greene Broillet & Wheeler if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- An uncomfortable feeling that your hip is out of joint (this can happen if the cup of the hip implant loosens) and a clicking or crunching sound coming from the hip
- Pain and swelling in the hip, groin, leg or lower back
- Difficulty walking

. It is what has allowed us to secure
billions of dollars in compensation for people who have been injured by defective products, including defective medical products.
Greene, Broillet & Wheeler achieved a significant confidential settlement for a prominent sportscaster after he received a defective hip implant that had to be surgically removed. In that lawsuit against Sulzer Ltd., our
defective medical product lawyers alleged that the orthopedic manufacturers knew about the faulty device.
An ongoing commitment to consumer safety underscores our efforts in defective product cases, but our primary goal is to ensure our clients achieve the financial recovery they need and deserve.
DePuy has said it will cover “reasonable and customary” costs of medical treatment for hip replacement patients who have received a defective hip. They will cover the cost of additional hip replacement surgery. However, those may not be your only expenses.
In most injury cases, the victim of a defective product is allowed by law to recover compensation for pain and suffering and for a diminished quality of life. If you are affected by the DePuy hip replacement recall, you should also be able to recover money for lost wages and lost earning potential if your hip problem has become so severe that it will affect your ability to work in future.
Demanding full accountability from the manufacturers of unsafe products serves an important purpose. It provides an incentive for companies to thoroughly and carefully test their medical products before putting them on the market.
