Each year, The Recorder publishes its Top Verdicts and Settlements in California supplement, which recognizes the highest grossing awards in categories such as motor vehicle, employment, wrongful death and product liability.
Escamilla Sanchez et al v. Durham School Services is listed as the 2nd highest motor vehicle verdict. Our trial team including Geoff Wells, Ivan Puchalt and Christian Nickerson secured a $36.1 million jury verdict in San Bernardino County on behalf of an 11-year-old girl who suffered severe injuries when a car struck her while she tried to cross the street in order to board her school bus. The girl’s family sued Durham School Services for failing to report and prevent mid-street crossings, which is a blatant violation of their own policies and procedures.
Tomislav George vs. First Service Residential, LLC ranked 4th highest motor vehicle verdict in California. Attorneys Bruce Broillet and Alan Van Gelder obtained a $15 million jury verdict with a finding of 20% comparative fault against the plaintiff, producing a net verdict of $12 million. The Los Angeles jury found a property management company responsible for the acts of an employee who drove intoxicated, resulting in a serious car accident.
Curtin vs. Orange County Sheriff’s Department came in 7th for a workplace negligence verdict involving a woman who was raped by an on-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy only months after another woman accused the same deputy of sexual assault. As co-lead counsel, Browne Greene secured a $2.25 million verdict in damages for the plaintiff’s claims.
Anthony Ghanayem vs Doe Company is the 5th largest mediated settlement involving worker/workplace negligence which was obtained by attorneys Browne Greene and Ivan Puchalt. The legal team secured a $5 million settlement with the company of an employee who assaulted the plaintiff. The plaintiff suffered a mild traumatic brain injury after the defendant’s employee repeatedly punched the plaintiff in the head and face. Co-counsel included Joseph S.
