One teen is dead and another has been arrested after a serious car accident yesterday morning in Long Beach. According to a press release from the Long Beach Police Department, an intoxicated Los Angeles teen was driving on the 710 Freeway when she lost control of her vehicle.
Authorities suspect that the 18-year-old Los Angeles woman was intoxicated when she hit a curb on the highway around 12:45 a.m. on Monday. The woman then overcorrected her vehicle and slammed into a sign and tree.
The car’s passenger side bore the brunt of the damage from hitting the sign and the palm tree. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene but the 19-year-old passenger died before he could be transported to a hospital.
Paramedics took the 18-year-old driver to a local hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. She was then arrested for vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. She was held in the Long Beach City Jail on $100,000.
Authorities closed southbound 710 Freeway to traffic until 7:15 a.m. while investigating the crash. It is unknown whether the teen driver will face a personal injury lawsuit from the family of the deceased 19-year-old passenger. Such lawsuits are common in fatal crashes caused by drunk drivers.
